Our History

Pets At Rest, Memorial Gardens

In 1998, Hobart’s first individual pet cremation service began. Then in 2000 we started the Memorial Gardens, to increase the range of services we could offer pet owners.

When we started Pets At Rest, Memorial Gardens – we were faced with a blank canvas! This land has been used to grow grain since Tasmania was first settled and no native tree has been allowed to grow since that time. Pets, People and the Environment, needed somewhere where the past could prepare for the future. So from this dry windy plain to a steadily increasing beautiful landscape, we Grow Green with Love.

We fenced off a good size area and started small with native shrubs and soon the Gardens and its community started to grow. We have introduced, our Living Gifts and Memorial Trees so that everyone has the opportunity to help the environment, by sponsoring the growth of a native tree.

In 2013, our story continued with the extension of our services to include new staff members on the road. Our Pet Crematorium here on site, is kept very busy as is our Personalized Engraving Services. Each day in the Gardens we see living proof of the need for our services and on going commitment to pet owners.

Pets At Rest Memorial Gardens‘ philosophy was born out of the need for Tasmania to have not only an individual pet funeral service, but also a Pet Cemetery which was an asset for the people of Tasmania. We wanted to be a part of providing this for people and their pets as well as working toward  improving the environment for future generations by planting native trees and shrubs.

We are here to offer you – Comfort, Care and Choice through and beyond this stage in your pet’s life.

Pets At Rest is owned and operated by Greg & Lindy Cleeland – we are the face, heart and broad shoulders of this challenging and exciting business.

We have had the good fortune of growing up with animals and being able to surround ourselves with our precious Scottish Terriers. We love our pets, and understand all too well the pain of losing them.

Both Greg and I are community-minded people who are actively involved with many related groups. We know how many people need  support and this is one way in which we can offer our support to you.

Memorial Gardens

The Memorial Gardens are a vital part of our rural property – and of our life – as are all the pet owners who we have been able to assist in some small way over the years. Seeing the Memorial Gardens alive with families visiting their pets, tending to the new trees, and working together toward a better environment is the realization of our dreams, which began when we lost our Lily. (Story Of Lily).

While the little native trees in the Memorial Gardens and in the Landcare area around the Gardens, struggle to grow and prosper, each day brings the Gardens closer to what we want them to be: A beautiful place for Pets and their People – because how else can you say:

“Thank you – for a lifetime of Love”

I picked up Spidey today and I was very pleased with the service you provided. I was quite emotional when I picked him up, which was to be expected I guess, but what I didn’t expect was to actually feel relieved and pleasantly surprised at how he was presented. Again, thank you very much for all your understanding and for looking after my baby boy with so much care and respect.

I am writing to thank you for your care of my dog Sandy, who recently passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Every time I had to speak to you, you were caring and sympathetic and made me feel like she was in really safe hands. It was good to get her home. The box was beautiful, and all the extra touches were lovely.
